Grey Heron

I went for walk today and I saw this Grey Heron land in a field. It had caught something silver, which I think it was a fish.

Grey Heron

These birds are very patient fishermen, they wade or standstill in water until they can snatch a small fish. They also eat amphibians and rodents. They are often found in the countryside near rivers and lakes. They have a wingspan up to 95cm long!  Although they are magnificent birds, some people with ponds see them as a pest. They use netting and statues to try and keep them away.
Herons build their nests high up in trees. They lay a clutch of around 3-5 bluish green eggs, which they both incubate for around 25 days. Many juveniles do not survive their first winter, but if they do, they can live for around 5 years
